The Many Faces of Baccarat

Regardless of the variation of baccarat a player chooses, the result of any hand will ultimately boil down to sheer luck. By understanding each independent variation, players will feel more comfortable and relaxed.

Chemin de Fer

Chemin de Fer is one of the earliest variations of baccarat and is most commonly found in France. In this game, the banker can only bet on his or her own hand for a win, while the other players at the table have the choice of betting on themselves, the banker or the tie.

Baccarat Banque

In Baccarat Banque, the role of the banker is always played by the house. Another key difference that players should note is that they will receive two hands to play instead of just one, and while they can place a wager on either of the hands they are dealt, they cannot place wagers on the banker's win.

European Baccarat

European Baccarat is popular in Europe outside of France and shares many of the same characteristics of Baccarat Banque. Here, the role of the banker is also played by the casino. The main difference is that players are given the decision to hit or stand when on a point total of five--something that is unique to this variation.

Mini Baccarat

With Mini Baccarat, there are only two players in the equation--the player and the banker. The player can choose which bet to place, but there is still a commission to be paid on all winning banker bets. Mini Baccarat is typically only found in online venues.

Most people will only play one or two of these blackjack variants during their lifetimes, but even so, it could really pay off to know the differences between them. Many casinos offer multiple variants from which to choose.
